Decontamination

Electron-beam treatment is the most commonly used form of irradiation technology to guarantee the lowest possible microbial load in the case of food packaging, cosmetics, and sanitary products.

The production of foodstuffs and cosmetics is rapidly developing in the direction of aseptic processes and the avoidance of preservatives. It is thus all the more important to ensure that all the materials used, especially primary packaging material, exhibit a low – if not zero – microbial load. The use of electron-beam technology is well established for the fast and efficient treatment of large quantities of packaging material. For cosmetics and sanitary products, all three technologies can be used depending on the product density. Even very low irradiation doses are lethal to certain pathogen microbes such as salmonella, in particular.
